MY PURPOSE

IMG_4332 (2).jpeg

As a kid, historical fiction books were everywhere. I read American Girls, The American Adventure series, and Childhood of Famous Americans. But once I became a teenager, it felt like all the good books disappeared.

One day, I noticed my mother clearing old books off our shelves, and I asked about one of the books I saw. She had never read it, but it belonged to my great-grandmother. It was Christian fiction, set in Biblical times but not with Biblical characters. I thought it sounded interesting, and it was. I stayed up late reading. Then my eyes widened, and my heart sped up. This is inappropriate, I thought. But I was too engrossed to stop.

I spent a week going through the trilogy. Several times I stopped, convicted against reading more, but the story kept pulling me back. I had to know what happened. I started hiding the book so my family wouldn’t see, although no one knew what it was about anyway. I felt God prompting me to put it away for good, but I couldn’t get the story out of my head.

I skipped many portions of the book, feeling it was too sensual and inappropriate. Yet the parts I did read left me feeling ashamed. I began to view romance differently, even the people around me differently. I was determined never to read a romance book like that again, even if the author were a Christian or an excellent writer. I turned to Christian book lists, hoping to find something good there, but everything contained the same kind of romance I wanted to avoid. I scoured the list for anything that didn’t mention romance, and even those unfortunately went down the same path.

I began to feel historical fiction was just not good for me. I found plenty of books in the contemporary or speculative genres that fit my preferences. But historical fiction has always been my favorite, so I prayed for God to bring me appropriate, wholesome books. He answered that prayer. For many years now, I have not needed to sacrifice my mind or purity for the sake of a good story. I have, at last, found my books. The characters taught me a new version of romance, one that was sweet and pure. They showed me what I wanted for my own love story, and most of all, pointed me back to Jesus.

This is why I pledge to you, as my reader, never to compromise your faith or purity the way mine was compromised by what I read. You want books that uphold true love, not lust, and that is what I aim to write. I write the historical fiction I once prayed to find—stories filled with love, peril, and adventure, where romance honors purity and true love reflects the sacrificial heart of Christ.

A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF

-I am the oldest of six, with my only sister as the youngest, twenty years apart from me.

-I have a love-hate relationship with crocheting, a hobby I picked up when people complained I read too much at parties. But they don’t complain when I crochet at parties! Crocheting is a good way to pass the time, but I wish I could get the finished product without the repetition XD

-One of my least favorite subjects in school was history, but I loved reading historical fiction. I didn’t care for history books until my senior year, when my curriculum started going into “life back then” and little-known facts rather than simply sharing the same stories I’d always heard.

-I taught myself all my hobbies (violin excluded). Through YouTube, I learned piano, crochet, archery, and even how to make my own bow and arrows. I learned to sketch and write from books on the craft.

-Creative writing was another of my least favorite subjects in school. Writing prompts seemed to hinder my creativity.

-I am a science nerd who doesn’t know much about science. I do enjoy learning new facts, though.

-If I wasn’t a writer, I would be either an anthropologist or a physicist.

-I consider the constellations my friends after taking astronomy for two years in high school.

-I have always loved horses and dream of owning a ranch.

-I hope to visit Scotland and Ireland someday and learn more about the Leslie clan.
